It’s fascinatingly poised.Rafael Nadal won a record 12th French Open title, defeating Dominic Thiem in four sets in the final. Yet Djokovic triumphed in the really big ones this year, winning the Wimbledon and US Open finals in four sets. Federer will presumably try to penetrate Djokovic’s defences with his finely honed serve-volley again. Half of Djokovic’s defeats in 2015 have come against Federer, who leads their head-to-head record 22-21 after Tuesday night. Djokovic says doesn’t feel unbeatable, but he has to say that, doesn’t he? He’ll be immensely confident about winning the World Tour Finals title for the fourth successive year.įederer and Djokovic were meant to meet in the final last year, only for the Swiss to pull out with a back injury he picked up in his semi-final win over Stan Wawrinka, but they have continued their battle for supremacy this year. Nadal, who has looked stronger than he has done for a while this week, was unable to carve out a single break point during an hour or so of chilling tennis from Djokovic, who managed to win while keeping some of his powder for Federer. He responded by making sure of his progress into the last four with a comfortable victory over Tomas Berdych and he was firing on all cylinders in his semi-final against Rafael Nadal yesterday afternoon, beating the Spaniard 6-3, 6-3. That was only Djokovic’s sixth defeat of what has been another astonishing year for the world No1 and it could yet get better. It happens sometimes, even to him.īut not very often. We’re all hoping for a classic, although their match on Tuesday night was slightly muted, Federer excellent in his straight-sets victory, but Djokovic off colour, his game not quite clicking for once. No matter what the rankings say – Federer will only take the year-end No2 spot off Andy Murray with a win this evening – these are undoubtedly the two best players in the world and the fans packed into the O2 will be hoping for a classic. They meet again, for the 44 th time in their fascinating rivalry and for the second time this week, and there is little to separate Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
